HEALTH PROFESSIONALS in the country make some consistent observations about THE M.H.I. (Atomic #53)
"...the best iodine source found on the market." "...always worked and the quality has stayed the same"
These two themes are repeated over and over...
Essential trace minerals such as iodine use to have a natural ecosystem supply route to replenish soils of the earth. Iodine came from the ocean. The wind carried iodine over the earth. When it rained trace minerals were deposited and absorbed into the soil. The amount of iodine in the diet varied depending upon the amount of iodine present in the soil in which plants grow or which animal's grazed. Even back as far as the 1930's iodine carried by the wind was depleted when it arrived to the middle of the United States. This region became known as the Goiter Belt. This epidemic forced the U.S. Government to promote iodine as an essential nutrient to be added primarily to salt to combat the terrible disease known as goiter.
Iodized salt is not healthy. The public is given false assurance that adequate iodine is supplied but iodides are not well tolerated by everyone. By using too much potassium or sodium iodide, it is possible to produce toxic reactions such as heart palpitations, skin rashes and stomach disturbance. Excess potassium or sodium iodide can even depress the thyroid, as well as upset the body's electrical balance.
Our formula has been in constant use since the early 40's. Today more nutrition-oriented health care doctors, pharmacies and health-food stores use this formula as a dietary thyroid support. It is often used successfully when other herbs, dulse, kelp and sodium/potassium iodides don't work. It is a high potency iodine and can be used with impunity. Our product is used in clinics as a dietary food supplement to raise the metabolism and support the thyroid. It is nontoxic and water-soluble. Unlike a sodium or potassium iodide it becomes a free iodine which is much easier to absorb and assimilate. The free iodine is the essential trace element which will help raise your metabolism and restore the electrical balance of the body.
Iodine is an essential trace mineral necessary to make hormones which help maintain certain functions of regulating your metabolism.
Iodine is also known to help prevent or counteract radio iodine poisoning in case of nuclear fallout.
After sifting through 50 years of iodine research and corresponding with researchers around the world, my personal research indicates that abnormal iodine metabolism, due either to bromide dominance in the environment or a dietary deficiency of iodine, must be addressed as part of a preventive and or a therapeutic strategy.
Iodine Deficiency Growing Worse
* Iodine consumption by Americans has dropped 50% since the 1970s(1). In the US Goiter Belt, where iodine in the soil is lower, certain disease are higher (2).
* By contrast, the incidence and severity of these specific diseases are less in Japan than in Europe and the US, attributable to the diet (3). Japanese women consume 25 times more dietary iodine than North American women and have lower disease rates (4).
* Meanwhile, since the 1970s, in the US and several other countries, iodine- blocking bromides have been added to flour, some sodas, and medications, exacerbating the iodine deficiency.
* Fluoridated drinking water also depletes iodine absorption. Thus, as women consume less iodine and excrete more due to toxic elements, our risk for disease grows(5).
Iodine and Benign Breast Disease
* Blocking iodine in rats' food supply led to progressive human-like fibrocystic disease (atypia, sclerosing, calcifications, dysplastic changes) as the rats aged (6). Supplementing patients with fibrocystic disease with iodine helped to resolve fibrosis and reduced breast size (7).
* For women with painful breasts accompanying fibrocystic disease, iodine improved symptoms in more than 50% of the women who took 6.0 mg. of iodine for 6 months (8), and brown sea alga improved pain and nodularity in 94% of the women (9). From the editors' observations of the Iodine Investigation Project participants, depending on the kind of iodine agent used, painful breast symptoms have resolved in from 24 hours to two months.
Iodine and Breast Cancer
* For breast patients, iodine's therapeutic mechanisms of action may be at least three-pronged: Hormonal (11), Biochemical (12-18), Genetic (19).
That is, iodine desensitizes the estrogen receptors, alters the chemical pathways as well effects on the genes, resulting in less cell growth, and causing anti-tumor effect by causing apoptosis (programmed cell death) of malignant cells.
* Iodine-rich seaweed exhibits an anti-cancer effect in rats and in the lab on human breast cancer cells.
Adding seaweed to rats' food delays the onset and number of rat mammary tumors (20,21). And in the lab, mekabu seaweed plant induced cell death in three kinds of human breast cancer cells. Mekabu had a stronger effect on the cells than the chemo drug, 5-fluorouracil (22).
* Adding iodine to chemically-induced (DMBA) rat breast tumors stops the growth of the tumors. Adding iodine plus medroxyprogesterone gave the highestlevel of response: the growth-suppressed tumors showed 100% times the iodine content than the full blown (nonsuppressed) tumors. The researchers suggest that the uptake of iodine was enhanced by medroxyprogesterone. (23). As David Brownstein, MD, phrased it, "You cannot give breast cancer to rats that have sufficient iodine."
* In small, preliminary patient studies, using the screening iodine-loading test, breast cancer patients excreted less urinary iodine than healthy people, implying iodine-deficiency (24,25).

Iodine Companion Nutrients. Many Iodine Literate Doctors suggest selenium(26), vitamin C (27), and magnesium(28) enhance the therapeutic value of iodine.
The Importance of Iodine
Iodine is absolutely vital for the formation of thyroid hormone in the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone is composed of four molecules of iodine and one molecule of the amino acid tyrosine. Scientific evidence clearly shows that a lack of iodine can cause changes to the thyroid gland directly leading to poor function of metabolism and immunity.* Iodine deficiency promotes free radical damage in the thyroid gland, directly stressing the health of the gland.*
Adequate iodine is also needed to block various compounds from binding to and accumulating in the thyroid gland (fluoride, perchlorate, goitrogens in food). Problems with chemicals affecting the thyroid gland have been known about for decades. A recent Russian study showed that general environmental pollution (of which the US has plenty in every metropolitan area) significantly aggravates iodine lack (meaning pollution displaces iodine in the human body).*
We have known for many years that free iodine is in high concentration in the ovaries and breast tissue, acting as a protective buffer to estrogen. Adequate tissue iodine helps guide estrogen into friendly pathways that support proper function of female sex hormones.* Iodine also assists the proper function of numerous hormone receptors throughout the body, thus helping hormones in general communicate more efficiently.* The rate that any hormone is formed is governed by thyroid hormone. Thus, thyroid nutrition combined with our Atomic #53 contribute to the formation of testosterone. In women this supports healthy sex drive. In men, testosterone is vital to function.*
Iodine is essential for brain function and intelligence. Since 2001 there have been numerous studies showing the importance of iodine during pregnancy, not only to help the mother's thyroid work better, but specifically for the cognitive and neurological development of the child.* The Atomic #53 Quality Difference
Atomic #53 is a proprietary iodine formulation that has been in widespread use since the 40's. I am often asked what the difference is between this iodine supplement and others, and many have asked what the source of the iodine is that is used in Atomic #53.
Atomic #53 Iodine is in my opinion the premier iodine supplement on the market today. This is because of the superior water solubility of the iodine. This feature makes free iodide readily available for your body to use.
There are two sources of iodine in the Atomic #53 formulation.
One is from kelp. Iodine in kelp is naturally in the form of potassium iodide. However, potassium iodine is not very soluble in water and may be difficult for your body to easily use. For example, if you get liquid potassium iodide on your clothes it causes a permanent stain of red. If you get Atomic #53 Iodine on your clothes the red will evaporate out in a few minutes or readily come out with washing. In fact, potassium iodide has been shown to congest the thyroid gland when taken in high doses and is how Hashimotos thyroiditis was first discovered (Japanese citizens consuming too many sea vegetables). This is why I don't use potassium iodide.
During the production of Atomic #53, iodine is extracted from kelp and made into pure iodine crystals. This is not potassium iodide, rather it is an unbound form of iodine.
The second form of iodine used is ammonium iodide, a form that readily dissolves in water. These two forms of iodine are combined in a proprietary manner in a base of vegetable glycerin.
Ammonium iodide is a combination of the mineral iodine and ammonium (NH4). This is a synthesized compound, not derived from a food source. It has superior bioavailability as the iodine readily disassociates from the ammonium upon exposure to water, producing a free iodide ion exactly what your body would like to use in metabolism.
Some people think that ammonium (NH4) sounds like some sort of toxin, compared to potassium or sodium iodide. This is far from the case. As different from ammonium, ammonia (NH3) is an irritant gas with a pungent odor. Anhydrous ammonia (meaning no water in the ammonia) is the third most synthesized chemical in the U.S., with one-third of it used by the farming industry as fertilizer and animal feed. The ability to fix nitrogen in some type of compound is vital to the growth of plants and crops. Many household cleaning products use ammonia in the form of NH3 plus water.
On the other hand, ammonium is a primary source of nitrogen for people. It is involved in many cellular chemistry reactions necessary for health. As dietary protein is metabolized ammonium is produced. The liver converts any extra ammonium to urea, which is easily cleared through the urea cycle. The amount of ammonium in Atomic #53 can act as a nutrient in normal cell metabolism or it can readily be cleared by the liver. The amount of ammonium in a dose of Atomic #53 is trivial compared to the amount of ammonium produced in routine protein metabolism.
The bottom line is that Atomic #53 Iodine is a very safe and effective form of iodine to use as a dietary supplement. In my experience over the past twenty years it has routinely produced outstanding results. What is the dose of Atomic #53 Iodine?
The most commonly used dose of Atomic #53 Iodine is 1 drop of the preparation in a few ounces of water, taken once a day. Each drop has 1.8 mg of iodine or 1200% of the governments recommended daily value. If you would like to get only 100% of the daily value then take 1 tsp of a mixture of 1 drop of Atomic #53 Iodine in 2 ounces of water; however, most people like taking more than this.
Adequate iodine tends to keep your head more awake during the day, helps support your energy level, and helps you warm up (if you are cold).* Many people take 1-5 drops of Atomic #53 Iodine per day, using enough to feel warmer and more energetic. While this can be taken all at once in the morning, some like to split the dose and take some in the afternoon as well.
Some people find that taking iodine every day really helps to support metabolism. Others find that they only need to take it once or twice a week. Regardless of the dose used or frequency of the dose, the goal is to notice energy support. And if you are too cold, another goal is to warm up. Atomic #53 Iodine is one of the best nutrients for natural thyroid support, especially helping those who are cold to warm up and get on track.*
Caution: We have received numerous reports of people taking 25 mg to 50 mg of potassium iodide-containing supplements each day, typically in the form of Lugols or Iodoral. I do not support the use of this protocol as the form of iodine used is inferior and the chance of congesting the thyroid with insoluble potassium iodide is elevated - a needless risk to take for any person trying to improve their health. I have never had any trouble helping people balance thyroidfunction on far less iodine intake, especially when synergistic thyroid support nutrition is used.
